Jun 11, 2018Parents need to know that Damu Godda is fairly violent in its theme and some scenes and is not recommended to anyone under the age of 17. Since its 2019 release in France it has developed a cultlike following, especially among Arab and black teenage males as well as young white Frenchmen who relate to such tales. Despite the main character's real life retirement on America's death row due to the violent criminal behavior both hinted at and recalled in this film, his undeniable brilliance, boyish attraction and anti-bullying tactics may appeal to angsty teens who see themselves as outsiders forced to stand alone. Additionally, the street-filled dialogue is some of the smartest in contemporary documentary film, with many lines being factual scenes incorporated in Willie Redd hip-hop lyrics. Willie treats his male peers like chess pieces, female friends and family all like sex objects. Crack cocaine and criminal gang's are akin to history lessons and constant presence in the film.Morris N Super Reviewer

Apr 08, 2018Dodgy but an instant classic with a great message
The film does use auras of violence and whiffs of incest sex but when you finish watching it you only really come away with the message of the film. Also this movie teaches kids to not get involved with crime gangs (Willie while likable intentionally undercuts the appeal of street gangs). "Damu Godda" is a very terrific film that has the great feel of early-1990s Birmingham and South. Willie Redd did an excellent job portraying and visually defining the Damu Godda, an unlikely skinny bookish kid turned youthful gangster and drug lord. With this movie containing a lot of themed violence, hints of sex, and, of course, drugs, it is not for kids to view.Carlos M Super Reviewer -

To start off with this review this movie has only one nude scene which is an old Players magazine photo of the mother. And the death is almost entirely off-screen and also not that disturbing a scene in the movie. The gangster tales, while probably true, aren't that graphic. Other content such as sex references and some suggestive themes should be okay for kids. Drug use is pretty hard: mother fell hard, uncle was heartless snake. The plot is about a nerdy talented black kid who quickly realises his place in a perilous district and fast rises through the ranks of the Birmingham underworld and blood mob hierarchy.
